It seems the popularity of handbags just keeps growing. Far from being a mundane affair, bags have evolved to become an exciting fashion accessory with considerations way beyond practicality driving their design. For example, many of the popular tote bags, I have noticed, do not even close fully at the top, leaving their contents somewhat exposed to the elements. Bags like the viral Coach Brooklyn Shoulder Bag and The Row Margaux bag do not even have a top zipper closure, which makes someone like me have nightmares of inevitably dropping them and having my personal contents spill everywhere.
The trending bags right now are exciting and interesting items that you cannot help but want to at least try on. They have aspects that appeal to all types of people and are versatile enough to work with many looks. Most of all, they are fun! Some highlights of the trends in bags today are:
1. Leather please! - whether real, faux or even vegan, the look of leather is king right now. Whereas canvas and saffiano had their time, the current "it" bags all showcase smooth, rich, succulent leather texture that feels and looks more quietly expensive. Whilst logos will never totally go out of style, the best bags have none, or are whisper quiet with their branding. The material of the bag is the star, lending a more elevated, luxe aura to fashion.
2. East-West - Longer than they are tall, east-west style bags are some of the newest and most interesting looking. What I've noticed is that they tend to hold more than expected in their compact form factor. They look like a nice update from the tote bags that have been all the rage for a minute now.
3. The colours of fall - rich burgundy, brown, olive greens and honeyed tans are the hues that are in right now. Again there's a certain depth to the colours that convey an opulence to every look. When all else fails though, one cannot go wrong with a true black bag, a colour which will always be in.
4. Stranger straps - Straps these days are interesting. They are long, short, combination lengths, metallic, leather, mixed material...any of the above. Sometimes a mix of the above. Unusual and innovative straps to carry your bags are trending ...and personally I find them exciting.
5. Crescent carry - crescent shaped bags are having a moment. The unusual geometry of these bags again tend to defy expectations - they often hold much more than might be expected. Added to that they create a very modern silhouette when worn with simple outfits. I think these bags are a fabulous way to instantly update your look without having to break the bank.
6. Enchantments - charmed I'm sure! Bag charms are everywhere lately. I've even heard tell that pins are coming back in style. At the moment everything from dainty hearts and flowers dangling off key rings to chunky chains looping from strap to strap, are used to adorn bags in any way you fancy. It is very common to see multiple charms on a bag at once, evoking a more is more aesthetic that I can truly embrace. I see them as allowing personal expression and playfulness, something we all need in these dark dystopian times. Here's to the power of fashion to inject happiness into our lives!
